Biografia
Dados biográficos
Phillipe Catalani (or Catallani) was born in 1729 or 1730, very probably in Rome[1]. He joined the Jesuits in 1750, and by 1756 was stationed in Goa, as a coadjutor brother[2]. On the night of the 26th September 1759 he was arrested, together with almost all other Jesuits in Goa. Catalani was confined to the Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Convento de Nossa Senhora do Carmo) in Chimbel, belonging to the Tertiary Carmelites[3]. Instead of being sent in chains, like the majority of his religious brethren, to an uncertain fate in Lisbon, Catalani was set free on the orders of the vice-roy [comp]. The reason for this leniency appears to have been pragmatic: Catalani was known to have skills as an engineer, and the Estado da Índia was in demand for such expertise.
He may have been related to Giuseppe Catalani (1698-1764), a liturgist and member of the Hieronymite Oratory of San Girolamo della Carità (Catholic Encyclopeadia...comp]
